Bangkok ASEAN Art & Culture Festival

The ten nations of the ASEAN Economic Community have set the year 2015 as their goal for reaching regional economic integration. Because cultural understanding is also a necessary part of economic integration, there is a new ASEAN festival happening right now in Bangkok, Thailand, in order to increase awareness of Southeast Asian art and production.

"Bangkok ASEAN Art & Culture Festival" or "BAFF" is a long term project sponsored by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Every month, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre holds seminars, activities, workshops, and exhibitions on specific topics of ASEAN culture. Because these programs are free and opened to the public, they can be easily accessed by both Bangkok citizens and foreigners.

This November, BAFF held several cultural activities as the start of its third period. On every Thursday, from 6 to 8 in the afternoon, there were programs about ASEAN movies. Here, a participant was be able to watch movies such as "Flower in the Pocket" from Cambodia or "Chanthaly from Laos and engage in discussion sessions. In December, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is sponsoring programs such as "Southeast Asian Conceptual Art Exhibition," "International Performance Art Festival," and more.

BAFF started on June 27th, 2013 and is planned to end on May 31st, 2014. The culture festival is divided into three periods. The first period, which was between June and August of 2013, was focused on "Knowledge Management Activities." The second period, which was between September and October, was about "ASEAN Art and Culture Workshops." The third and longest period, which starts in November and ends next year, is based on "Arts Exhibitions and Activities."

Anyone who is interested in participating in BAFF can visit the homepage or Facebook website in order to learn when and where the programs are held. The Bangkok ASEAN Art & Culture Festival is expected to become an influential force in the spread of Southeast Asian cultural understanding.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/lifestyle/music/374719/asean-voices-float-through-the-region

Drums and Voices

Twelve musicians from seven different Southeast Asian nations have gathered in order to represent their traditional music. This concert, also known as "Drum & Voices," is sponsored by the Japan Foundation in celebration of the 40th year of Japanese and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation.

With the guide of the renowned Japanese music director Michiru Oshima, the D&V team is now ready to start their performance. From October to December of 2013, D&V concerts are planned to be held in Hanoi, Yangon, Bangkok, Vientiane, Tokyo, and many more major cities.

The twelve musicians from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Japan, Brunei, and Myanmar were selected to participate in this half-year long music project with the goal of creating a stronger Southeast Asian music identity. Through workshops in Thailand, during June to July, and in Vietnam, from August to September, the participants were able to learn about each other's traditional music and discover ways of creating a certain harmony among them. Through cooperation and share of expertise in music, D&V is expected to announce musical pieces that capture the essence of all Southeast Asian traditions.

D&V is to become a forerunner of musical and cultural cooperation and understanding among Southeast Asian nations.
