A report that describes the roadmap to improve the Global Initiative on out-of-school children and amend the reality of Education for All (EFA) was announced during the opening session of the Education World Forum in London, United Kingdom. In relation to the report, a press interview was organized on 19 January and a ministerial discussion took place on 20 January. The report was published by UIS (UNESCO Institute for Statistics) and UNICEF with support from GPE (Global Partnership for Education) and World Bank.

Although the original goal of EFA was to ensure that every child would complete primary school by 2015, the team of writers of the report concluded that about 121 million children and young adolescents are still not guaranteed their right to education.

The report studied a diverse group of countries participating in the Global Initiative on out-of-school children. It provides data, research and policies needed to revitalize action for out-of-school children with regards to the new development agenda for education. This consultative meeting will be expected to promote and advocate UNESCO’s and UNICEF's common goal of inclusive and equitable education and life-long Education for All in the post-2015 agenda.

UNESCO’s first regional conference before the 2015 World Education Forum was held in the Asia-Pacific region, bringing almost 20 education ministers and their representatives from 37 countries to Bangkok, Thailand from the 6th to the 8th of August 2014.

The Asia-Pacific Regional Education Conference (APREC) provided a platform for the participants to discuss the progress made in achieving the six EFA goals in the region, to examine the remaining challenges, and to reflect on future priorities and strategies for the region in order to achieve the emerging post-2015 education agenda.

Apart from the plenary sessions, parallel sessions on sub-regional group discussions and thematic discussions were organized; one of the thematic discussions was titled, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Chaired by Mr Utak Chung (Director of APCEIU) and Dr Anantha Duraiappah (Director of MGIEP, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development), the session was divided into two parts. The first part was on ‘Policy and Practice of GCE at Country Level’ and the second part was on ‘Measuring GCE/ESD’. Three countries’ cases were presented, which included Singapore, Philippines and the Republic of Korea, and this was followed by group discussions and a presentation on the topic, “What are the existing measurements and what needs to be developed?”
During the conference, APCEIU’s publications and multimedia materials were displayed at the exhibition hall, which garnered attention from numerous government officials and educators in the region.

After the three days of fruitful and productive discussions, a strong and unified voice for the region was reflected in the Asia-Pacific Statement on Education Beyond 2015, which is also known as the Bangkok Statement. This statement represents one of the main regional inputs going into the 2015 World Education Forum, which will in turn inform the UN Summit in September 2015, where the final international development agenda for the next 15 years will be announced.
