On 16 January, APCEIU and Korea Academic Council of United Nations System (KACUNS) hosted the 5th Symposium of for Development of International Organizations’ Series at APCEIU under the theme of “Economic Development · Science Technology · Regional Cooperation Global Governance and Future of Korea and International Organizations.”

Sponsored by the National Research Foundation of Korea, the symposium discussed in detail about economics-and-technology-related international organizations, a topic that had not been covered by the previous four studies, as well as dealing with regional cooperation and regional organizations, thereby extending the field of international organization research. Furthermore, the symposium was significant in that it surveyed the future of Korea and international organizations at a point in which the three-year research was completed.
Through a systematic research about international organizations, the symposium is expected to make great contributions to the government and citizens’ understanding of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Peace Education. Academic papers presented at the symposium will be published as Study on International Organizations (Series 7-10) in late August.
The 5th symposium consisted of two sections, in which Session 1 of Section 1 dealt with “Economic Development, Trade, Financial Global Governance and International Organizations” in terms of economics related international organizations such as IMF, WTO, World Bank Group, OECD, and UNDP. The topic for Session 2 was “Regional Cooperation and International Organizations,” focusing on the regional cooperation in Asia, America, Europe, and Africa, respectively, as well as discussing about each region’s representative regional organizations such as ASEAN, OAS, EU, and AU.
As for Section 2, Session 1 discussed “Science Technology Global Governance and International Organizations” and focused on science technology related international organizations such as ITU, WMO, IMO, WIPO, and IAEA. Session 2, “The Future of Korea and International Organizations,” focused on the topic of the future of Korea and international organizations and dealt with the historical development and relationship of Korea and international organizations and future tasks concerning international organizations and global governance. Both sections served as a forum for debate about specific details of the development of international organizations’ series, activities of international organizations and common values, and measures to promote practical activities of international organizations.

On 9 December, APCEIU released two new publications under the title of International Organizations: Past, Present and Future and United Nations and World Peace. The publication is the first outcome of the study on international organizations that started in 2012 under the sponsor by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
The release marks another accomplishment of APCEIU’s contribution to the development of researches and educational programmes that promote Education for International Understanding (EIU). As such, the International Organizations Series is expected to take the first step in building the base for a more organized study of international organizations. The publication is more meaningful as it overcomes the limitations of the currently fragmented and inconsistent study system, providing a more systematic and comprehensive study.
The series aims to provide academic contributions for conducting studies on international organizations as well as practical assistance to governmental and civic activities in international organizations. Published in Korean, the series will be used as a textbook in local universities across Korea, also providing guide to people interested in working in international organizations.
Meanwhile, the second year of the study has commenced last September and aims to publish a total of four books that examines various international organizations in 16 different fields including human rights, refugees, migration, society, culture, sports, population, health, women, children, food, agriculture and environment.
