International Literacy Day on September 8th

8 September every year is International Literacy Day (ILD) reminding a world the importance of literacy. Under the theme of “Literacy and Sustainable Development”, UNESCO is celebrating 2014 ILD by highlighting the significance of literacy.

According to UNESCO, literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning which is important for social and human development. Also literacy has important impacts on creating dynamic community since people can actively participate by means of communication to create better society. For over 65 years, UNESCO has worked to ensure and increase literacy rate world widely with a vision of a “literate world for all”.

Literacy and education plays a key role in one nation’s development. In order to provide education, there should be literacy at the first part, and in order to develop one nation, there should be education. Through education, countries can empower their citizens to become skilled professionals, and these professionals become the prime source to develop the nation.

In 2003, UNESCO took the lead of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003- 2012 where United Nations developed literate environments for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy with a slogan of “Literacy as Freedom”). After taking the lead, UNESCO strives to take actions in increasing the absolute numbers of the literates with the cooperation of main mechanism; the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE).

With the UNESCO’s previous efforts to eradicate illiteracy, UNESCO is getting ready for celebrating the 2014 International Literacy Day on September 8th.
