Bringing together the finest writers from all over Southeast Asia, the first ASEAN Literary Festival 2014 was held at Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center, Jakarta from 21st to 23rd March 2014. This year’s theme of the festival is “Anthems for the Common People”, which is inspired by “Song of the Grassroots” by Indonesia’s influential poet and activist Wiji Thukul. With the theme, ASEAN Literary Festival wanted to dedicate itself to become the voice of ordinary people.

Over 40 prominent writers, scholars and artists from ASEAN countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Filipina, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Timor Leste perform and discussed the role of literature to help the member countries fostering a just society, as well as boosting human rights, freedom of expression and democratization. More than 600 people from all across Indonesia and the region also joined the festivity of the three-day event.

The festival featured discussions on various interesting topics such as “Contemporary ASEAN Literature” and “Democracy, Human Rights and Literature". Aside from the series of discussions, there were workshops, art performances, poetry reading, book signing, book exhibition, children’s literature, writer’s corners, publisher’s corners, community corner, and many more.

The ASEAN Literary Festival is the first cultural event where all ASEAN countries share proximity, similarities in culture and literature as well as sharing history of being colonized, level of democratization and economic development. The festival seeks to become a medium to boost the quality of the region’s literary works while being one of the bridges to get people of literature and public in general within the region to know each others’s culture, arts and literary works, boosting the likelyhood of ASEAN to become full-pledge community.

With the participation of 6 members and 1 member residing in US, KIM Si Ra was selected as the leader. Furthermore, members also set out the general framework for the next five months, discussing on agendas including the schedule for regular meetings and development of action plans.

Recently, 15-year-old students in Shanghai, China have once again scored the top in PISA Global Education assessment which is the second time in the decade. Students of Shanghai China have scored “better than average” in all three subjects tested by PISA: mathematics, reading and science. Compared to China, the United States ranks worse than average in mathematics and around average in reading and science.

PISA stands for the new Programme for International Student Assessment of the OECD and is an international survey purposed for the evaluation of education systems around the world by testing 15-year-old students about their skills and knowledge. The reason why PISA is different from other tests is that the questions are not directly linked to the studies in the school curriculum. Since the year 2000, in every three years students were randomly picked from schools around the world to take tests in the subjects reading, mathematics and science. Other than the score evaluation itself, PISA also gathers information about the social background of the students and this helps to understand the relationship between social, economic, and cultural factors and education. According to OECD, students from over 70 economies have participated in this evaluation today. In answer to the growing curiosity of the outstanding performance of the Chinese students, the students say that if one puts in effort into studying the teachers will help them become successful in their studies.

However, there is a huge educational divide in China nevertheless how high the educational success is inside the country. Statistics point out that whereas 84% of high school graduates in schools in Shanghai make it into university entrance, only 4% of students studying in rural districts make it into university. This is a huge gap and this derives from the vastly unequal educational background inside the country. This is why the Chinese government has come up with a new educational reform plan so-called the 10 year national education reform plan. The plan has been published for the main purpose of turning the country rich in young talent by 2020. The pledges included in the plan are to modernize the current form of education in order to create a new learning society and raise human resources that will enrich China’s future. Therefore, the plan aims to focus less on written tests but rather plant successful teachers in rural districts as well and into other areas that needs teachers in order to lessen the gap between the ‘educated areas’ and the ‘uneducated’.
