  1. 2014.11.02 The Workshop for Enhancing Young Generation's Pedagogical Capacity in Ethics

Ethics Teacher Training Course was held in Amman, Jordan

The Ethics Teacher Training Course (ETTC) was held from 19 October 2014 to 23 October 2014 in Amman, Jordan. It was the first time that ETTC was held in the Arab Region since the course that was held in 2007 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This course is a workshop involving UNESCO and the Jordanian National Committee on Ethics of Science and Technology (NCEST), Hashemite University, and the Jordanian National Commission for UNESCO.

The Ethics Teacher Training Course was aimed to enhance pedagogical capacity for ethics teaching and improve the quality of ethics education all over the world. Responding to the need expressed by UNESCO Member States and the local partners for quality ethics education in the Arab region, UNESCO put together a team of competent ethics professors with a deep understanding of the region – Dr Manal Bouhaimed from Kuwait University, Dr Bahaa Darwish from University of Minia, Egypt, and Dr Nada Eltaiba from Qatar University. They shared their knowledge and experience about how to effectively teach ethics, and how to spread universal bioethical norms and principles through education. The beneficiaries of the training were ethics educators from Jordan and other countries in the region, eager to build their pedagogical capacities in bioethics.

This course was designed as a five-day training module developed by UNESCO in cooperation with the global experts in ethics education. The module contains the following key components:

1. Global Perspective on Ethics Teaching: trends, challenges and opportunities

2. The UNESCO Core Curriculum as a tool for promoting quality ethics education

3. Ethics Teaching in Action: what and how to teach (a model lesson)

4. Workshop: Sharing experiences in ethics teaching from the local perspective

5. Classroom communication: pedagogy and psychology of ethics teaching

6. Simulated teaching presentations by participants followed by feedback from the Course instructors

Ethics education is becoming an important part of promoting knowledge-based, sustainable, and equitable development. An effective ethics teacher should be knowledgeable about how to teach, as well as what to teach to the students. Along with this, UNESCO designed this ETTC workshop, with the purpose of building capacity of a young generation of teachers who can serve as agents for expanding and improving ethics teaching programs in their countries in the near future.

The ETTC graduates, numbering in several hundred after numerous events held around the world, become UNESCO’s partners in promoting and applying the bioethical norms and principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. In 2014, a Course is also supposed to be held in Muscat, Oman (7-11 December), as well as other venues to be announced for 2015.
